Uppsala’s electricity grid was built for a different era. Demand is growing faster than the grid can expand, driven by urbanisation and the shift to fossil-free transport and industry.
We asked how design could help electric vehicle drivers understand the grid’s limits and its current stress, and change how they charge, and how they use energy in general, to ease it.
The concept is a system for charging at home and at work. A colour system shows the grid’s status, a power cord lights up when V2GVehicle-to-grid (V2G)Vehicle-to-grid: letting a parked EV send power back to the grid when demand peaks. is active, and two screens show the positive change that’s possible when people act together. It gives EV owners an active role in the energy system.
