Choosing electives in the Uppsala HCI master’s was a common complaint. Course descriptions were vague, students rarely met the lecturer or alumni before applications closed, and many of the rules for choosing were unclear or unknown.
We first wanted to help every Uppsala student, since they all used the same system. After the early seminars and research we narrowed to the HCI programme, so we could reach the right people and understand their problems properly.
The result is Backpack: pick your areas of interest, browse and compare courses, read course details, follow a community feed, find internships, and learn the rules for choosing electives. In user tests it clearly improved what students knew before choosing.
