Ethics of extended realities

HCI Researcher · RISE · Stockholm · Jan – Jun 2023

At RISE, Research Institutes of Sweden, I ran a systematic literature review of the ethical issues raised by augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, across healthcare, education, entertainment, and enterprise.

Most research on XR ethics looks at one technology, application, or group of people at a time. I wanted the whole picture: which ethical issues XR raises, what harms and barriers they create, and what solutions have been proposed.

The review found a wide range of issues, from social implications to privacy risks and moral dilemmas, with far-reaching effects on people’s lives. I turned them into practical design recommendations for building XR that is safe and ethical.

At the time I was also designing XR products at Warpin, and I went on to found NeXR Labs.
