Spendely

Uppsala University coursework · 2022

Money matters to every student, but for international students living on hefty education loans, every penny counts. As an international fee-paying student myself, I couldn’t find a good expense tracker, so like many students I fell back on spreadsheets.

A typical expense spreadsheet kept by a student from India studying in Sweden

Spendely is a concept for an app that shows spending trends, forecasts, historical comparisons, reports, and insights. Expenses go in through a single form, and the dashboard turns them into widgets: recent and top 10 expenses, and splits by category, group, and payment mode.

The Add Expense form

The main widget compares this month’s spending with the budget and with last month, as an area chart against a line. Other views compare the month with the monthly average and with the same month last year. Bar and doughnut charts keep it easy to read, and a compare icon on each widget shows the month-on-month change.

The dashboard

Students can add their home currency and see everything in it, either at today’s exchange rate or at the historical rate for each day’s spending.
