A duty free shop in an airport

Summary

Overview

Heinemann, like many other travel retail companies, is facing significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel restrictions and reduced passenger numbers have had a major impact on the business. Additionally, changing consumer preferences especially from the Gen Z and the rise of e-commerce have created new challenges for the company.

The goal of this project was to rethink travel retail, brand loyalty, and evolve the current digital offer beyond luxury products, limited editions, and partner benefits into a more personalized, connected, and inspiring journey experience.

Heinemann is a German company that operates duty-free shops and other travel retail businesses in airports and other global travel destinations. They sell cosmetics, fashion, confectionery, and electronics, among other things. To address the shift in the travel retail landscapes and issues emerging from it, we created TravelU, a conceptual app we researched and designed.

Travel U offers a new way for people to experience duty-free shopping around the world. It offers omnichannel shopping experience through navigating seamlessly between the app and physical stores. With Travel U, Heinemann is more active and personalised for travellers.
